The ‘Officer of the Month’ award recognizes the efforts of an individual with the rank of patrol officer from Division or a Special Unit, who has demonstrated exceptional dedication in the performance of his/her duties during the previous month. I am very pleased to announce that our selection for this month’s LPD ‘Officer of the Month’ is Officer Jose Torres, who is assigned to the First Division.
This nomination was submitted by Lieutenants Kenneth Runyan and David Hines and seconded by Sergeant Gary Hagerty and Captain Chris Kelly.
As noted in Lt. Runyan and Hines’ written nomination, “Office Torres’ command presence and ability to communicate effectively has resulted in deescalating situations which could have had much worse outcomes. One incident where he recently received a commendation was a fight at the shelter in July. Officer Torres was first to arrive at a chaotic scene where two males with knives were fighting in the stairway to the lower entrance off of Washington St. He was able to maintain control of both males, drawing his service weapon and issuing effective commands to both. Although this could have resulted in the use of deadly force, Officer Torres was able to maintain his composure and distance and resolved the situation without injury to any involved. This is just one example of many where he has demonstrated his composure under pressure and unwavering commitment to duty.”
Sgt. Hagerty added, “Officer Torres has proven to be a reliable and dedicated officer. He consistently shows up ready for work, handles calls effectively, and maintains a positive attitude. He always reaches out and forwards information along that he develops during his course of duty.”
Lt’s Runyan and Hines concurred by noting, “He shows great situational awareness in responding to calls as well as follow-up investigations, often finding surveillance footage and gathering information that is shared with other units which help in identifying suspects leading to arrests and charges.”
Captain Kelly agreed adding, “Officer Torres has been instrumental in assisting CID on numerous occasions, providing valuable support through his extensive route knowledge and translation skills. I have personally witnessed Officer Torres display exceptional professionalism and empathy toward families who have recently experienced tragic losses.”
Captain Kelly concluded by noting, “Officer Torres has demonstrated, over an extended period, his commitment and dedication to the department’s mission and is truly deserving of recognition as Officer of the Month.”
Congratulations and thank you to Officer Torres for a job well done!
