The ‘Officer of the Month’ award recognizes the efforts of an individual with the rank of patrol officer from Division or a Special Unit, who has demonstrated exceptional dedication in the performance of his/her duties during the previous month. I am very pleased to announce that our selection for this month’s LPD ‘Officer of the Month’ is Officer James Atkins, who is assigned to the Second Division. This nomination was submitted by Sergeant Jerren Griffin, and endorsed by Lieutenant Robert Godbout, who spoke on his behalf; with additional positive comments also submitted by Captain David Brown.
As reported by Sergeant Griffin, “Officer Atkins joined the LPD in May of 2022, and since that date, has been a proactive member of this department.” He noted that Officer Atkins is currently assigned to the downtown area and handles a wide range of calls, stating that “he conducts himself in a highly professional manner, takes his route responsibility seriously, and is well versed with the individuals who engage in anti-social behavior. ” He also pointed out that “it is not uncommon for Officer Atkins to self-initiate traffic stops or a “check person.”
Sergeant Griffin’s nomination then stated that “since the beginning of this year, Officer Akins has been involved in 46a arrests; with 12 of these occurring within the last 30 days.” In addition, after a recent posting on DHQ regarding individuals breaking into cars at the MBTA garage, it was noted that “Officer Atkins was involved in the arrest of three suspects who were in the process of breaking into a vehicle; and has also been involved with several arrests that range from Domestic Assault and Battery, Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon and Trespassing.”
As stated in this nomination, “Officer James Atkins is a professional member of this Department, an officer that other officers can rely upon; and is becoming a leader on the 01:00-09:00 shift.”
From the period of June 21 – July 20, 2024, Officer James Atkins will have the exclusive use (24/7) of a designated parking space, which is located right next to the spaces currently reserved for our Captains.
In addition, effective January 2024 and ongoing, the individuals selected as Officer of the Month will also be awarded 1 additional bonus day (C/T day) for their outstanding efforts.
Congratulations and thank you to Officer Atkins for a job well done.
