The ‘Officer of the Month’ award recognizes the efforts of an individual with the rank of patrol officer from Division or a Special Unit, who has demonstrated exceptional dedication in the performance of his/her duties during the previous month. I am very pleased to announce that our selection for this month’s LPD ‘Officer of the Month’ is Officer Connor McHale, who is assigned to the First Division.
This nomination was submitted by Lieutenants Kenneth Runyan and David Hines and seconded by Sergeant Gary Hagerty.
As noted in Lt. Runyan and Hines’ written nomination, “Officer McHale has been a consistent officer on First Division, always willing to help out where needed. He also volunteers to assist Officer DeStefano with fleet issues given his background and prior work experience. In addition, he’s also been the responding officer on multiple critical incidents to include the shooting on Woodman St. in May and the homicide on Camden St. where he rendered medical aid. He also signs up for many of the traffic grants and steps up for other officers even when he has previously been inversed and would otherwise be protected.”
They further noted, “In addition to his great work ethic, there have been several standout incidents which warrants his selection. On July 4th, while still responding to calls for service, Officer McHale along with his partner Officer Barnard, were in the area of Gardiner St. when they observed three males dressed in sweatshirts, sweatpants and masks walking towards Curwin Cir. This drew their attention given the time of year and temperature coupled with the past gang related incidents in the area. One of the males was tucking his hand inside his sweatshirt and appeared to be concealing something. When the three males saw the cruisers, they took off running and were temporarily lost. After clearing another call for service, Officer McHale again saw one of the males on Boston St. coming out from behind Loomos Bros. liquor store where they were able to detain him with the assistance of the Gang Unit. A search of the area resulted in a firearm being found and arrest of the male. This incident is the second time Officer McHale has been directly involved in stopping gang associates resulting in arrests and firearms being taken off the street undoubtedly preventing shootings.”
Sgt. Hagerty added, “Officer McHale has demonstrated exceptional work habits over the past several months. His consistent efforts could make him a nominee every month. He regularly shares gang-related intelligence that he uncovers in the course of his duties. Additionally, he is always willing to provide backup and support to fellow units whenever needed.”
Congratulations and thank you to Officer McHale for a job well done!
