The ‘Officer of the Month’ award recognizes the efforts of an individual with the rank of patrol officer from Division or a Special Unit, who has demonstrated exceptional dedication in the performance of his/her duties during the previous month. I am very pleased to announce that our selection for this month’s LPD ‘Officer of the Month’ is Detective Chris Hagerty, who is assigned to the Gang Unit. This nomination was submitted by Sergeant Gary Hagerty and seconded by Lieutenant Mark Nerich and Captain Tim Donovan.
As noted in Sgt. Hagerty’s written nomination, “Since joining the Gang Unit, Detective Hagerty has consistently demonstrated a high level of expertise, dedication, and initiative, particularly in his efforts to disrupt and deter gang activity across the city. He maintains strong communication with Division Officers and is always ready to assist them with calls for service or investigations. He routinely positions himself in known gang hotspots and dedicates significant time to surveillance and intelligence gathering.” Sgt. Hagerty highlighted two recent cases that demonstrate his great work. “On June 16, 2026, Detective Hagerty and Lieutenant Nerich observed several juveniles on the cliffs at the end of Hutchinson Court. Using binoculars, Detective Hagerty identified one male as a known associate of the Tiny Rascal gang and a suspect in several violent incidents in Lynn. He and another male were wearing hooded sweatshirts and masks despite 80-degree weather, which Detective Hagerty found suspicious. As officers approached, both males fled on foot. During the pursuit, officers observed one suspect holding his waistband in a manner consistent with carrying a firearm. After a brief chase, both individuals were apprehended. Detective Hagerty recovered a firearm from the male he recognized, while the second suspect discarded a firearm into a yard, where it was later recovered by officers.”
“On July 9, 2026, officers pursued a stolen motor vehicle that was later recovered near the residence of a known Westside World gang associate with a history of vehicle thefts. Detective Hagerty, working with Division personnel and the Gang Unit, conducted a two-week investigation that established probable cause for two residential and two body search warrants. On July 29, 2026, the warrants were executed, and both suspects were arrested. During the search, officers recovered a backpack containing an Autel key fob programming/scanner kit, which the Massachusetts State Police Vehicle Crimes & Auto Theft Unit identified as a tool commonly used to clone or program key fobs and steal vehicles without damaging the ignition or interior.” Sgt. Hagerty concluded by noting, “Through his diligence, tactical awareness, and effective coordination with patrol and investigative units, Detective Hagerty has proven to be an invaluable asset to the Gang Unit. His commitment to reducing gang violence and improving community safety is clearly reflected in his actions. He is more than deserving of this recognition.”
