The ‘Officer of the Month’ award recognizes the efforts of an individual with the rank of patrol officer from Division or a Special Unit, who has demonstrated exceptional dedication in the performance of his/her duties during the previous month. I am very pleased to announce that our selection for this month’s LPD ‘Officer of the Month’ is Officer Edward Pettipas, who is assigned to the First Division. This nomination was submitted by the Lieutenant Ashley Affonco and seconded by Lieutenant Kenneth Runyan.
As noted in Lt. Affonco’s written nomination, “As a senior officer, Officer Pettipas set the standard through decades of service, beginning with early commendations for exceptional police work and continuing through key assignments with the Drug Task Force and Special Investigations Unit. His leadership, tireless dedication, and numerous letters of appreciation and commendations reflect the lasting impact he has had on the department and the community.” It was further noted, “Officer Pettipas has dedicated more than 20 years to training officers as a firearms instructor, consistently challenging them to improve and become stronger professionals. As a master TASER, ICAT, DT, and ALERRT instructor, his knowledge, experience, and professional approach have had a lasting impact on countless officers.” Lt. Affonco also noted, “Officer Pettipas, long known as the voice of the city, took the van out during the Fourth of July holiday. He shared valuable lessons with young officers at roll call, emphasizing officer safety, smart crowd management, and keeping streets clear during large gatherings. His real-world experience and commitment to ensuring everyone went home safely provided guidance that will likely stay with officers throughout their careers.”
Lt. Runyan also emphasized, “Officer Pettipas has been a strong advocate and mentor for military veterans within the department, helping them access benefits and navigate available resources. He also looks out for officers facing personal, mental health, or substance abuse challenges, ensuring they receive support when needed.” Lt. Affonco concluded by noting, “Whether responding to community needs, supporting department traditions (Marine Corp Birthday Party) or volunteering at department events, Officer Pettipas consistently demonstrated his commitment to both the public and his fellow officers. Respected for his professionalism, generosity, and dedication, he will be deeply missed, and I can think of no better way to honor him than by nominating him for Officer of the Month.”
Congratulations and thank you to Officer Pettipas for a job well done!
